History

Andrew J. Squire was born in 1850 in Mantua, Ohio. His family moved to Hiram Township in the early 1850s and built a house on the present-day site of the Kennedy Center. Squire, whose father taught at the College and served as the local physician, graduated from Hiram College in 1872. Armed with letters of recommendation from then-Congressman James A. Garfield and President of Hiram College Burke A. Hinsdale, Squire earned a clerk's position with a local law firm. One year later, he was admitted to the bar. In 1890, Squire helped found the Cleveland-based law firm of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. Throughout his lifetime, Squire maintained his strong ties to the Hiram Community, serving as a trustee of the College from 1880 to 1933. Squire died in 1934.
